**ScrapRight University: Using Material Codes for Fast Ticketing**
This guide explains **Material Codes** in ScrapRight — short, unique identifiers (alphanumeric codes) assigned to each material. They allow quick entry of commodities during ticket creation without navigating folders or buttons, speeding up high-volume ticketing (especially useful for catalytic converters, common items, or touch-screen setups).
**Benefits of Material Codes**
- Type a short code (e.g., "SRUTest") → material auto-adds to ticket.
- Saves time vs. clicking through groups/folders.
- Ideal for repetitive materials or busy scales.
- Works alongside folder navigation.
**Prerequisites**
- Materials already set up (see ScrapRight 103 guide).
- Workstation configured and assigned materials (see ScrapRight 104).
- Admin access if adding/editing codes.
## Part 1: Assigning or Editing a Material Code
1. **Navigate to Materials**
- Go to **Materials** tab (top menu).
- Select **Materials** (main list view).
2. **Add a New Material (or Edit Existing)**
- Click **Add Material** (or open an existing one).
- In the popup:
- **Code**: Enter a short, memorable code (e.g., "SRUTest", "ALSH" for Aluminum Sheet, "CANS", "YC" for Yellow Brass).
- Can be letters, numbers, or mix.
- Keep unique and short (3–8 characters ideal).
- **Description**: Full name (e.g., "SRU Test Material").
- **Material Group**: Select group (e.g., Aluminum) — auto-applies compliance rules.
- Optional: Check **Exclude from DPS** (if no state reporting needed for this material).
- Set **Base Price** (e.g., $1.00/lb).
- Click **Save Material**.
3. **Assign to Workstation (Critical – Materials Won’t Appear Otherwise)**
- Go to **Admin** > **Configuration**.
- Select **Workstations** on left.
- Click your active workstation (e.g., "Admin Workstation").
- Expand groups → find new material (e.g., under Aluminum).
- Check the box next to it.
- (Optional: Drag to reorder for preferred display.)
- Click **Save**.
## Part 2: Using Material Codes on the Ticketing Screen
1. **Open a New Ticket**
- Go to **Ticketing** / **Transactions** screen.
- Start a new ticket (add customer, etc.).
2. **Enter Material via Code**
- Look at top right of ticketing area: Find the **Material Code** box/input field (labeled "Material Code" or similar).
- Click/type in the code (e.g., "SRU" or "SRUTest").
- Press **Enter** — material auto-adds to ticket with correct price, group, compliance prompts.
- Repeat for additional items (type another code → Enter).
3. **Alternative / Fallback**
- If code not found: Use normal folder navigation (click group → select material).
- For catalytic converters (or other quick-entry items): Codes are especially fast — type code instead of multi-click process.
4. **Verify**
- Material appears in ticket list with description, price, quantity fields ready.
- Proceed with weights, compliance (photos/ID if required), and payout.
## Best Practices & Tips
- **Code Strategy**
- Short & intuitive: "AL" = Aluminum, "YB" = Yellow Brass, "SHRED" = Shredded Steel.
- Prefix for categories: "AL-" for all aluminum (ALSHT, ALCANS).
- Avoid duplicates — codes must be unique system-wide.
- **Common Uses**
- High-volume items (cans, #1 copper, shred).
- Catalytic converters (often require special entry/compliance).
- Touch-screen or keyboard-heavy stations.
- **Troubleshooting**
- Code not working? Confirm:
- Material assigned to current workstation.
- Code entered exactly (case-sensitive?).
- Workstation saved after assignment.
- No code field? Ensure using latest version or correct ticketing mode.
- **Maintenance**
- Review codes periodically (Materials list → sort by code).
- Train staff: Print quick-reference sheet of common codes.
**Example Workflow (Fast Ticketing)**
1. Start ticket.
2. Scan customer ID.
3. Type "CANS" → Enter (adds aluminum cans).
4. Type "YB" → Enter (adds yellow brass).
5. Weigh/enter quantities → payout.
Material codes turn slow clicking into lightning-fast entry — perfect for busy days!
