Scrap Points Advanced tutorial

# ScrapRight Training Guide
**Scrap Points Advanced Tutorial: Customer Loyalty & Rewards Program**

This guide provides a detailed walkthrough of the **Scrap Points** feature in ScrapRight — a powerful loyalty/rewards system that incentivizes repeat business. Customers earn points based on materials they bring in, accumulating toward redeemable rewards (e.g., $10 gift cards, t-shirts, cash bonuses, TVs, or other prizes). It encourages higher-quality material (e.g., more points for copper than steel) and builds customer loyalty.

**Key Benefits**
- Reward loyal customers automatically → increases repeat visits and material quality.
- Flexible: Points per pound vary by material group; redeem at thresholds.
- Trackable: Full points log, reports, and multi-yard sharing.
- Future enhancements planned (e.g., multi-tier rewards).

**Prerequisites**
- Admin access.
- Materials and material groups set up (see ScrapRight 103).
- Decide reward (e.g., $10 gift card as a "material" item).
- Optional: VIP/loyalty cards for eligible customers.

## Step 1: Enable & Configure Scrap Points (Global Settings)

1. Navigate to **Admin** > **Configuration**.
2. Select **Organization** tab (left sidebar).
3. Scroll to **Scrap Points Configuration** section.
4. **Enable Scrap Points**: Check the box to activate the feature.
5. **Redemption Threshold**: Set points needed for a reward (e.g., 100 points = one $10 gift card).
6. **Disable Points Redemption** (optional): Check if cashiers should **not** handle redemptions — management does it manually via customer record.
7. **Enable Points Globally** (optional):
   - Checked: Every customer auto-earns points (simplest but less controlled).
   - Unchecked (recommended): Manually enable per customer (e.g., for VIP/loyal customers only).
8. **Calculate Points by Material Group** (recommended): Check to allow different earning rates per group (e.g., 1 point/lb copper vs. 1 point/100 lb steel).
9. **Share Points Across Multiple Yards** (multi-location only): Check and connect facilities via IP (points sync across sites).
10. Click **Save**.

## Step 2: Set Up the Reward "Material"

1. Go to **Materials** tab > **Materials**.
2. Find or create the reward item (e.g., "$10 Gift Card – Scrap Points").
   - Code/Description: Clear (e.g., "Gift Card $10").
   - Price: Dollar value (e.g., $10.00) — adds to ticket payout when redeemed.
   - Group: Optional (e.g., Misc or Rewards).
   - **Important**: This acts as a non-sale item — no real inventory deduction; just adds payout credit.
3. Save the material.
   - Future: Support multiple reward levels (e.g., 100 pts = $10 card, 500 pts = $50 card).

## Step 3: Configure Points Earning per Material Group

1. Go to **Materials** tab > **Material Groups**.
2. Open each group (e.g., Aluminum, Copper, Brass, Steel).
3. Set **Points per Unit** (if "Calculate by Group" enabled in Step 1):
   - Example:
     - Aluminum: 1 point per 2 lb
     - Copper/Brass: 1 point per 1 lb (higher reward for valuable material)
     - Steel: 1 point per 100 lb
     - Paper/Cardboard: 1 point per 200 lb (or 0 if unwanted)
   - Adjust based on your margins/value — reward non-ferrous more.
4. Save each group.

## Step 4: Enable Points for Individual Customers

1. Go to **Customers** tab.
2. Search/open a customer record (peddler or business).
3. Check **Enable Points** (or "Participate in Scrap Points") checkbox.
   - This activates the **Points Log** tab in their record.
4. Save — customer now eligible to earn/redeem points.
   - Give them a loyalty/VIP card for branding (optional but effective).

## Step 5: Earning Points During Ticketing

1. Start a new ticket → add eligible customer (points-enabled).
2. Add materials → system auto-calculates points based on group rates and weight.
   - Points accrue silently (added after payout).
3. Pay out ticket — points post to customer's record.

**Example**:
- 50 lb Yellow Brass (2 lb = 1 pt) → +25 points.
- 100 lb Copper (1 lb = 1 pt) + 2000 lb Steel (100 lb = 1 pt) → +100 + 20 = +120 points.
- Cumulative: 25 → 145 → etc.

## Step 6: Redeeming Points

1. Pull up customer on next ticket.
2. If points ≥ threshold (e.g., 100+): "Redeem Your Points" link appears.
3. Click → confirm redemption.
4. System adds reward material (e.g., "$10 Gift Card") to ticket → adds $10 to payout.
5. Cashier hands gift card + cash/receipt.
6. Points deduct (e.g., -100) — log updates.

## Step 7: Viewing & Reporting Points

1. **Customer Record** → **Points Log** tab:
   - Earned per ticket (breakdown by group).
   - Redemptions/deductions.
   - Running total.
2. **Material Group Points Report** (special report):
   - Breakdown by group (e.g., 68 from copper, 20 from steel).
   - Total earned (excludes redemptions).
3. **Reports** > **Customer Reports** > **Top Customers** (or Points view):
   - Date range filter.
   - Shows current points balance for all points-enabled customers.
   - Sort by highest points → identify top loyal customers.

## Best Practices & Tips

- **Start Small**: Test with 1–2 VIP customers before rolling out.
- **Reward Strategy**: Higher points for high-margin/valuable material (copper > steel).
- **Transparency**: Show points on receipts or customer portal (future feature).
- **Multi-Yard**: Enable sharing for chain operations.
- **Future Updates**: Multi-tier rewards, auto-notifications — provide feedback to ScrapRight.
- **Troubleshooting**
  - No points accruing? Confirm customer enabled + group rates set.
  - Redemption not showing? Points below threshold.
  - Report issues? Check date range/filters.

Scrap Points turns one-time sellers into loyal regulars — great for retention and quality material!
