Scanning VINs in the App

# ScrapRight Training Guide
**How to Buy Vehicles Using the iPad App – VIN Scanning & Vehicle Ticketing**

This guide explains how to purchase vehicles (junk cars, trucks, etc.) directly from the **iScraprite** iPad app, including how to scan the VIN barcode to automatically pull vehicle details such as make, model, and year. This feature saves time, reduces manual entry errors, and helps with accurate record-keeping.

### Prerequisites
- The iPad is already connected to your ScrapRight database (see the previous “Connect Your iPad” guide).
- You are using a material that is configured to support vehicles (e.g., “Complete Car,” “Junk Car,” “Junk Truck”).
- The iPad has a working camera.

### Step 1: Enable VIN Scanning for the Material (One-Time Setup – Web/Admin)
Before VIN scanning works, the material must be flagged correctly.

1. Log in to the ScrapRight web admin panel (desktop/computer).
2. Go to **Admin** → **Materials**.
3. Search for and open the vehicle-related material (e.g., “Complete Car” or “Junk Vehicle”).
4. In the material details, locate the **VIN** checkbox.
5. **Check the box** to enable VIN functionality for this material.
6. Click **Save**.

**Note**: Repeat this step for every vehicle material type you plan to use (junk cars, trucks, etc.).

### Step 2: Create a Vehicle Ticket on the iPad App
1. Open the **iScraprite** app on your iPad.
2. Start a new ticket (same as any other ticket).
3. Add the customer:
   - Search for an existing customer or create a new one.
4. Add the vehicle material:
   - Locate your vehicle material (e.g., “Complete Car”) in the material list or quick groups (usually at the bottom left).
   - Tap to add it to the ticket.
   - Enter the **net weight** (vehicle weight) if required, then continue to the next screen.

### Step 3: Scan the VIN and Capture Vehicle Details
1. You’ll now see a dedicated vehicle entry screen with two main sections:
   - A large black rectangle labeled **Click to scan the VIN barcode**
   - A section below to **load the vehicle title** (optional)
2. Tap **Click to scan the VIN barcode**.
   - The iPad camera opens automatically.
3. Point the camera at the vehicle’s VIN:
   - Common locations: driver’s side door jamb, dashboard (near windshield), or engine bay.
   - Hold steady until the barcode is in focus.
4. As soon as the VIN is recognized, the app automatically:
   - Fills in the **VIN number**
   - Pulls and displays vehicle information (e.g., **2004 Honda**, make, model, year)
5. (Optional) Add extra details:
   - Vehicle color
   - Notes about the chassis or condition
6. (Optional) Tap the vehicle title section to **upload a photo/scan of the title** (recommended for legal records).
7. Tap **OK** to save the vehicle information and return to the ticket.

### Step 4: Finish the Ticket
1. Back on the main ticket screen, take one or more **photos of the vehicle**:
   - Tap the white photo area or camera icon.
   - Capture clear images (front, side, back, damage, etc.).
2. Review the ticket (weight, price, customer info, VIN data, photos).
3. Proceed to **Pay the Ticket**:
   - Choose payment method (cash, check, advance, etc.).
   - Complete payout directly from the iPad if desired.
   - Or print a weight ticket and finalize later at a cashier station.

### Best Practices & Tips
- Always scan the VIN when available — it auto-populates accurate year/make/model and improves record accuracy.
- Take multiple photos of the vehicle (exterior, interior, odometer, damage) — this protects against disputes.
- Upload the **title** photo whenever possible — especially for titled vehicles.
- Train staff to check the VIN box is enabled for all vehicle materials before attempting to use the feature.
- If the VIN scan fails (poor lighting, damaged barcode), you can manually type the VIN number.

That’s how simple and powerful it is to buy vehicles using the iPad app in ScrapRight — with fast VIN scanning and full documentation!
