Adding Materials
# ScrapRight Training Guide
**ScrapRight 103: Adding Materials and Material Groups**
This guide walks through setting up **Material Groups** and **Materials** in ScrapRight — a key step after completing compliance and organization settings (from ScrapRight 102). Material Groups act as folders on the ticketing screen, organizing commodities logically (e.g., Aluminum, Brass, Steel). Materials are the individual items you buy (with prices, codes, and compliance rules).
**Why Do This?**
- Groups keep your ticketing screen clean and intuitive (folders for quick access).
- Materials define what you purchase, their base prices, and any state-specific compliance (photos, ID, etc.).
- After adding, assign materials to **workstations** so they appear on the correct scale/ticketing stations.
**Prerequisite**
- Complete ScrapRight 101 (overview) and 102 (compliance & organization).
- Log in as an admin user with configuration access.
## Step 1: Create Material Groups (Folders)
Material Groups come first — they control compliance inheritance for all materials inside them.
1. Navigate to **Materials** tab (top menu).
2. Select **Material Groups**.
3. Click **Add Material Group** (top right).
4. Fill in the fields:
- **Group Code**: Use a numbered system (recommended: space by 100s for organization).
Examples:
- 100 → Aluminum Group
- 200 → Brass Group
- 300 → Steel Group
(You can use letters/numbers/symbols if preferred, but numbers keep things sorted.)
- **Description**: Name of the group (e.g., "Aluminum", "Brass", "Steel").
- **Type**: Select **Non-Ferrous** or **Ferrous** (affects reporting/aggregation on dashboard).
- **Compliance Rules**: Check all that apply (inherited from global compliance settings).
- For most metals (e.g., sheet, brass): Require photos, ID, signature, vehicle plate, etc.
- For exempt items (e.g., aluminum cans in many states): You can override later per material.
- Optional: Set **Minimum Weight** for compliance to trigger (e.g., only over 50 lb requires full checks).
- Check **Cat** if this group is for catalytic converters (special rules in some states).
5. Click **Save Material Group**.
6. Repeat for each major category (e.g., Aluminum 100, Brass 200, Steel 300).
**Result**: These appear as folders on the main **Ticketing** screen.
## Step 2: Add Individual Materials (Commodities)
1. Go back to **Materials** tab.
2. Select **Materials** (main list view).
3. Filter to the desired group (left sidebar or dropdown) — e.g., select "Aluminum Group" to add only aluminum items.
4. Click **Add Material**.
5. In the popup window (3 tabs — focus on **Basic Info** for starters):
- **Code**: Sequential within group (e.g., 101 for first in Aluminum group).
- Not critical — just for internal sorting/reference.
- **Description**: Clear name (e.g., "Aluminum Sheet", "Cans", "Yellow Brass", "Shred").
- **Group**: Dropdown — select the correct group (this auto-checks inherited compliance from the group).
- **Base Price**: Enter current buy price per unit (e.g., $0.30/lb for Aluminum Sheet).
*Note: Prices fluctuate — check local yards or sites like iScrap App for PA rates (as of early Feb 2026 examples):*
- Aluminum Cans: ~$0.50–$0.80/lb
- Aluminum Sheet/Siding: ~$0.60–$0.70/lb
- Yellow Brass: ~$2.20–$2.30/lb
- Steel Shred/Prepared: ~$0.05–$0.10/lb (often per cwt/ton)
Update regularly via bulk upload or manual edits.
- **Purchase Unit**: Default lb; change to ton, each, cwt (hundredweight), etc., if needed.
- **Compliance Override** (right side): Auto-checked from group — uncheck if exempt (e.g., uncheck all for "Cans" if no compliance required in your state).
6. (Optional tabs for advanced):
- **Configuration**: VIN requirements (for vehicles), other checkboxes (detailed in future videos).
7. Click **Save Material**.
8. Repeat for additional materials in the same group, then switch groups and continue.
**Example Setup**:
- Aluminum Group (100):
- 101: Aluminum Sheet – $0.30/lb (compliance on)
- 102: Cans – $0.25/lb (compliance off)
- Brass Group (200):
- 201: Yellow Brass – $1.25/lb (compliance on)
- Steel Group (300):
- 301: Shred – $0.05/lb (compliance on)
## Step 3: Assign Materials to Workstations (Critical Final Step)
Materials won't appear on ticketing screens until assigned to workstations.
1. Go to **Admin** > **Configuration**.
2. Select **Workstations**.
3. Click your workstation (e.g., "Admin Workstation" or create new ones like "Truck Scale", "Floor Scale").
4. On the right panel: Expand groups → see all materials.
- Check **Select All** to assign everything (recommended for admin/main station).
- Or selectively check (e.g., uncheck steel for non-ferrous scale).
- Drag/reorder materials for preferred display order on ticketing screen.
5. Click **Save**.
6. Go back to **Ticketing** screen:
- Switch workstation if needed (bottom indicator).
- Folders now show with assigned materials in your chosen order.
**Troubleshooting Tip**: If materials don't appear on ticketing → double-check workstation assignments.
## Best Practices & Tips
- **Group First, Then Materials**: Compliance inherits from group — saves time and prevents errors.
- **Code System**: 100s for groups → easy expansion (e.g., add 103, 104 later).
- **Exempt Items**: Override compliance per material (e.g., cans often exempt).
- **Pricing**: Start with realistic local rates; update frequently (bulk spreadsheet upload available — ask support).
- **Testing**: Create a test ticket after setup to verify folders, materials, prices, and compliance prompts.
- **Advanced**: Index pricing, vehicle VIN rules, price lists — covered in later videos.
You're now set to start buying! Materials are visible and compliant on your ticketing screen.
